Why Perfect is Overrated 🧭

Hi reader,

When is the last time something in your life fell apart?

I can think of five distinct things just this year.

It feels like many of my friends can list just as many things right now, too.

It feels like nature is letting go of the dead leaves.

It feels like the world is wiping away its tears filled with fairy dust and unmet expectations.

Two notes have helped me stay grounded in this amazing year of change.

One is that birth and death feel the same.

The compost literally feeds the new growth.

Rituals, ceremony, and family gatherings surround both the beginning and the end of life.

They turn time forward, death turning the adult child to the old man or crone, birth moving the adult child into the parent.

Both are inevitable.

No wonder we can’t tell the difference.

And there is absolutely no beginning you’ve experienced that wasn’t proceeded by an ending ♻️

Second, how we end things is more important than how we start things.

Your true character isn’t revealed in the spark, but in the ember.

It’s easy to get swept up when things are pregnant with possibilities.

The future is undetermined, so we can believe whatever the hell we want.

But what about when it is just rubble?

The possibilities of an expected path narrow down to none.

How do you read the tea leaves then?

Well, you can’t.

Instead, it is trusting that the hope you had before will carry you to a better expectation.

It is seeing the disappointment that things aren’t perfect is just your version of keeping control.

It is knowing that you didn’t know.

And then, and only then, will you start to see the seed of the next journey flickering in the ashes 🔥

As you’ve seen in recent BringYourWorth.tv episodes, my office has been stacked with books lately! Shortform is one of my favorite companions for understanding books quickly and remembering the highlights from classics I may have forgotten. The service goes well beyond summaries, giving serious breakdowns, analysis, arguments, and even overarching themes connecting a book to other pieces of literature. It also showcases material related to your favorite book, like popular podcasts, articles and more. Shortform is a great way to sample new books you’re curious about or to go deeper on ones you already know super well.
