When All or Nothing Doesn't Work 🤷🏾‍♂️

Hi reader,

I was talking to a friend and realized there was a moment when the immersive, 100+ hour sandbox video games like Grand Theft Auto stopped being my entertainment, the the dust began to fall atop the super-long cultural history books on my shelf, and TV show marathons became almost non-existent.

After a moment, I almost gave myself a face palm. It was when I became a father. Obviously 🤦🏾‍♂️

I would never trade my sons even for Grand Theft Auto VI (the white whale of the gaming industry), but every adult - including you - likely had a moment when time limited your depth of experience.

Not time as far as age, but time as far as how many hours you have in the day.

To you, adulting may mean more hour at the job to pay bills, using your days to improve your lifestyle, or spending years making sure your dependents get to the next stage.

No wonder we can often struggle to make new friends as adults, keep ourselves as interesting within our relationships, or get out of ruts as we get older. Having an interesting life is much easier when having an interesting life is all you have to worry about.

Take on 2025 with the tools to manage leads, clients, and projects like a pro—and a chance to win a $10,000 prize package for your business.

That’s one of the trade-offs I would not accept when my beautiful son came just over a decade ago: I wasn’t going to give up an interesting life. And if I wasn’t going to show him, and, later, his little brother what an interesting life could be, then who would?

It isn’t a coincidence that the 400 BringYourWorth.tv episodes, dozen independently-published books, 4 experiences with TED, two bootstrapped startups, and a partridge in a pear tree all arrived after fatherhood. As I share in The Bite-Sized Entrepreneur, even though I had less time than ever, I also had more motivation than ever. Now they had a blueprint on how they can be a loving leader of their family and make an impact on the world. It is up to them what parts of it they follow. My only job is to make sure they have one.

And so many of y’all that I coach play on this knife’s edge between being grounded and stretching for the stars. That’s what we do when we invest in ourselves while pouring into our babies. That’s how we find the strength to do that 9-to-5 and still show up for ourselves in that side hustle. That’s when we grow our branches while we stretch our roots.

So how can you go deeper? We just need to do it one bite at a time 👇🏾

One of the resources I wish I had when I started writing (cough) decades ago was the Institute for Independent Journalists. I’ve known founder Katherine Reynolds Lewis for almost as long as I’ve been freelancing and have loved her new, inclusive take on what defines good, important journalism.

And the Institute for Independent Journalists is having its 2025 live, online freelance conference on Feb. 27-28!

Here’s the breakdown: Engage in 12 information-packed, interactive sessions on pitching, harnessing artificial intelligence, funding your journalism, podcasting, boosting your income, and more. On day one, keynote speaker and author Celeste Headlee will share her experiences working in mainstream media (NPR, PBS, WNYC), as well as independently. Learn directly from editors what they want in a pitch, including from Bloomberg, the New York Times, Washington Post, Economic Hardship Reporting Project, and more. Fellowship directors will explain how to get funding for an important journalism project. The best way to weather a storm is together.

Only $59 early bird registration for 12 live, interactive sessions, delivering 15 hours of learning. Sign up now and get instant access to a bonus bundle with four recorded full-length editor panels, three recorded interviews with freelance experts and New York Times opinion editor Katie Kingsbury, a layoff recovery guide, tip sheets, freelance checklists, an income tracking worksheet and more.

And BringYourWorth.tv viewers get an exclusive discount! Register here and use the promo code DAMON to get an immediate price off the already early bird cost.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket ⌛️

As you’ve seen in recent BringYourWorth.tv episodes, my office has been stacked with books lately! Shortform is one of my favorite companions for understanding books quickly and remembering the highlights from classics I may have forgotten. The service goes well beyond summaries, giving serious breakdowns, analysis, arguments, and even overarching themes connecting a book to other pieces of literature. It also showcases material related to your favorite book, like popular podcasts, articles and more. Shortform is a great way to sample new books you’re curious about or to go deeper on ones you already know super well.
