You can be everything (just in different places) 🍱

Hi reader,

You may be old enough to remember the rap double-album, a rite of passage for everyone from Outkast to 2Pac. It was like a “Momma, I made it!” moment: I’m hot enough to release twice as much material and keep the same quality!” In theory, at least…

A pronounced, but often forgotten one was Nelly’s 2004 Sweat-Suit. You guessed it: There was a Sweat album with party anthems and a Suit album with slower jams. My friends and I spent the whole summer correcting each other in how to say it. “It’s not sweatsuit! It’s sweat… suit.”

It reminds me of the bifurcated paths natural to our creative lives. We sometimes don’t make a living at what we love, or we love what we do and need other pieces to do the work, or we used to live off of something, but we took a detour and now… and so on and so on. The moves in an artist’s life are as straight as a crooked street.

And the sooner we accept that, the smoother the road becomes.

We explain the latest business, finance, and tech news with visuals and data. 📊

Like Nelly, it becomes a conscious, dare-I-say healthy compartmentalism: We know all of our sides will not be fulfilled in one broad stroke, so let’s put the different fulfilling pieces together.

This year, I have been outside - catch my new government-focused content exclusively on MOXY with code BROWNDAMON, join me on a self-publishing panel this Friday, and so on - but I haven’t been outside. I’ve taken a break to recharge and recalibrate BringYourWorth.tv after 360 episodes, I have no new book on the horizon after doing 7 in as many years, and I’ve been doing less journalism for marquee outlets.

Instead, I’ve been ghostwriting to raise wonderful voices, learning more about AI and generative tools, making business moves that will literally affect my children’s lives after I’m gone, and many, many things completely behind the scenes.

It is quiet work. It is the Suit to my Sweat.

I was catching up to a similarly-established friend recently and we both marveled at how neither one of us needed to be in the spotlight as much as before. We’ve had the limelight. We’ve been on the stages. It’s not that we don’t do it anymore. It’s just that we don’t have to.

The work, and the resulting impact, comes first. And sometimes it is quiet. And sometimes it is loud.

You have permission to embrace both 🤗
